Fat Cattle Report
Good morning, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 4th week of March, 2022. Tallied numbers this week included –
2500 fat cattle
8000 lambs and
4400 mutton
Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a mixed quality yarding on offer with good numbers of young cattle for the processors and feeders with a limited supply of grown steers and heifers but a good amount of cows penned. There was also a large consignment of weaners/yearlings from the far west for the back grounders and restockers.
Young kill cattle were firm with prime vealers selling to 616c/kg. Prime steer yearlings brought 510 – 610 cents and the prime yearling heifers made 472 - 588c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were 10cents dearer with feeder steers selling from 484 - 616c/kg, while the feeder heifers made 468 - 575c/kg. Young restockers were dearer selling to a top of 835c/kg for steers and 780c/kg for heifers.
Grown steers and heifers were 5 cents cheaper with the prime grown steers making 380 – 482c/kg. Prime grown heifers sold from 410 – 458c/kg. Cows were 5 – 10 cents dearer, with the medium 2 & 3 score cows selling from 260 - 375c/kg, while the prime heavy weights made 372 - 412c/kg to average around 394c/kg.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –
Firstly to Hermidale for the Currans family off “Wyola”, who sold well bred Angus heifers for 476 cents, they weighed in at 515kg coming back at $2452.
Down the road to Nyngan for the Burley family off “Woodlands Station”, who sold young restocker Angus cross steers that weighed 312kg and made 672 cents, bringing $2097.
To Tooraweenah now for the McWhirter family off “Springfield”, who sold well finished Angus cross steers for 440 cents, weighing in at 805kg making $3542.
Locally at Yeoval for the Vaughan family off “Iona”, who sold a nice line of Angus steers for 603 cents, weighing 511kg coming back at $3082.
Lastly to Wellington now for the Thompson family off “Gowan Green”, who sold a nice line of well bred Angus cows that weighed 678kg bringing 398 cents and making $2698.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now, where it was a plainer quality yarding with a fair portion of lambs lacking finish, there was still a selection of both trade and heavy lambs throughout, but only limited number of Merino lambs.
Trade weight lambs were $10 - $12 cheaper with quality being the main factor. Trade weight old lambs made $152 - $195 to average around 735 – 795c/kg. Heavy weight lambs up to 30kg and over were $5 - $10 cheaper with old lambs over 24kg- 30kg selling from $190 - $248 to average 775c/kg, while the lambs over 30kg made from $237 - $250 averaging 720c/kg. The limited Merino’s were $10 cheaper with trade weights making from $142 -$153.
Just a quick quote this week for Matt & Kylie Whale off “Glenroy” at Wellington, who sold a nice draft of 2nd cross trade lambs with an inch skin, with the lead draft selling for $190 while the seconds made $182.
Into the mutton pens now, where it was also a mostly plainer quality. Light and medium weight sheep were $10 dearer while the heavier weights lost $5 - $10. Merino ewes selling from $80 - $211 and the crossbred ewes made $110 - $212. Merino wethers sold from $145 - $196.
Just another quick quote for the Gibson family off “Wilgadale” at Girilambone, who sold, well bred Merino ewes with a 2 inch skin, in a 3 score condition to the local export orders for $168.
