Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everybody this is John Lindsay taking a look at the markets this week out of Dubbo for the last week of March, 2022.  Tallied numbers this week included –

1850 fat cattle
8000 lambs
4000 mutton and
1100 store cattle

Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a smaller number on offer, mainly due to some early week rainfall across a large area.  The quality in general was very mixed with the market selling to a cheaper trend of mainly 5 to 10 cents and could have been more on the plainer types and mainly due to quality, with cows up to 5 to 8 cents cheaper also.

Vealer steers mainly to restockers 595 to 784 cents.  Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters 548 to 597 cents, with plainer restocker drafts 550 to 660 cents generally and hovering around 700 cents for the better quality drafts.  Heavier drafts over 400kg to feedlotters 442 to 600 cents, with the drafts in the 400’s mainly being Bos Indicus cross drafts, with an isolated kill sale 500 to 576 cents. Yearling heifers under 400kg to feedlotters were in shorter supply but seeing sales between 410 and 480 cents for the crossbred/Bos Indicus drafts, with the more British drafts making up to 566 cents. Heavy drafts over 400kg to feed 440 to 556 cents.

Heavy steers were in shorter supply this week seeing sales between 420 and 458 cents and mainly being 4 teeth.  Medium weight cows 330 to 378 cents, with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 330 and 387 cents and this week topping at 405 cents, with the best bulls making up to 330 cents for the pick of the yard.

Into the lamb pens now, where due to widespread weekend rain, numbers were affected, however, the numbers were small at the draw to start with.  The quality was mixed with some good lambs on offer, however the market was firm to $5 cheaper and could have been more in places, on what was a tougher market than the week before.
