Fat Cattle Report
Good morning everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the third week of July, 2021. Tallied numbers this week included –
1500 fat cattle
20000 lambs
5000 grown sheep and
1200 store cattle
Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a larger number than last week, with most categories represented on what was once again an extremely strong market.
Vealer steers – mainly to restockers 445 to 690 cents for drafts under 280kg, with the heavier portions also to restockers 548 to 636 cents. Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters 384 to 588 cents with the top end being Angus drafts. Drafts over 400kg to feeders 392 to 533 cents, with kill drafts 398 to 470 cents generally and up to 508 cents for the pick. Yearling heifers under 400kg to kill in shorter supply 355 to 518 cents, with feeder drafts 382 to 518 cents and up to 538 cents for the fresher types. Heavier drafts over 400kg to kill in limited supply, but seeing sales between 428 and 548 cents.
Into export sales, with grown steers in short supply but seeing sales between 410 and 428 cents. Cows were extremely strong, with medium weight cows 286 to 310 cents generally and up to 340 cents, with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 305 and 355 cents and this week topping at 370 cents.
Just some quick quotes for Carter Lindsay & Weber clients this week –
Jeffreson Pastoral Company from Wellington, sold weaner Angus steers to backgrounders that weighed 250kg for 632 cents and these top calves came back at $1590, while on the same truck extremely clean Angus cows, 640kg – 368 cents and they came back at $2355.
While for The Currans Family at Hermidale, who sold Angus cross heifers to restockers for 548 cents, they weighed 215kg and they came back at $1185.

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a larger number on what was a fully firm to slightly dearer market, with the quality of the lambs this week definitely a big help on what was a competitive market.
Into young lambs or suckers firstly with a few starting to drift in, with trade drafts $160 to $200 and up to $220 for the heavy trade
With some export weights over 24kg dressed making up to $231.
Into older crossbred lambs, light kill types up to 18kg dressed $126 to $140
With light trade weights $170 to $191
Medium trade $189 to $215
Heavy trade $178 to $239
Light export $194 to $245
With drafts up to 30kg dressed $220 to $266
With super heavies well over 30kg dressed $245 to $270 and this week topping at $290
Into Merino sales, light kill drafts up to 16kg dressed $116 to $142
Up to 18kg dressed $140 to $176
Light trade $130 to $184
Medium trade $150 to $190 but needed to be rounded and fresh
Heavy trade $175 to $211
Light export $175 to $184
With export weights up to 30kg dressed $220 to $235
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –
Firstly locally for The Whale Family of “Glenroy” at Wellington, who sold medium weight trade lambs with a ½ inch skin, in a 3 score condition for $188.
Paul Vernon of “Gunners Dam”, sold large frame Merino lambs to the light exporters in a 3 score condition with a ½ inch skin for $206.
The Whillock Family of “Maxland” at Geurie, sold tidy trade weight 2nd cross lambs with a ½ inch skin and these top lambs made $218.
At Tottenham for Brad & Sophie Cook of “Donola”, who sold 1st cross lambs with a 6 week skin, in a 3 score condition and these tidy lambs made $204.
Howard & Michelle Weber of “Kia-ora”, sold young 1st cross lambs to restockers and these tidy young lambs made $160.
And lastly at Nyngan for The Hoare Family of “Karabran”, who sold heavy export weight SAMM lambs in a 4 score condition, with a 6 week skin and these top lambs made $276.
Into the mutton pens now, where it was a good quality yarding of mutton with the yarding one again fully firm on what was a very strong market once again.
Boner ewes $123 to $140
Medium weight ewes $128 to $195 for crossbreds or $122 to $160 for Merino’s
Export drafts up to 30kg dressed $164 to $215 for crossbreds or $152 to $197 generally and up to $214 for Merino’s
With super heavy drafts over 30kg dressed $196 to $256 for crossbreds with Merino’s $220 to $236
Medium weight Merino wethers $147 to $164
With export weights $157 to $228 and mainly all being Merino drafts.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients –
Firstly to Coolah for The Scanlon Family of “Sonnborra”, who sold trade weight Merino wethers in a 3 score condition, with an 8 week skin and these top wethers made $176.
At Nyngan for The Smith Family of “Box Cowall”, who sold large framed export weight SAMM ewes, with a 1 inch skin and these top ewes made $236.
While on the same truck as the lambs, Howard & Michelle Weber sold large framed Merino wethers to the exporters, with a ¼ inch skin and they made $198.
