Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Shaun McHugh taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 3rd week of March.
Tallied numbers this week include:

1700 fat cattle
8500 lambs
2900 mutton and 2000 store cattle.

Into the cattle pens firstly, where some big rain events reduced numbers slightly. A good selection of feeder calves where on offer as well as good numbers of Bos Indicus yearlings. Grown steers and heifers were limited in a slightly dearer market.

Young cattle to the trade were 10 cents stronger. Prime steer yearlings sold from 384c to 496c/kg, while the heifer portion sold from 415c to 487c. Feeder steers sold to a top of 476c/kg, that’s firm on last week and feeder heifers sold from 380c to 453c/kg. Young cattle to the restocker were dearer with the young steers selling to 564c/kg and the heifer portion selling to 484c/kg.

Grown steers and heifers were 5 cents better. Teeth being the main price indicator as steers ranged from 340c to 415c/kg and the heifer portion sold from 330c to 398c/kg.
Cows were from on last week good rates, with the D3/4 cows selling from 291c to 317c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients -

Locally for the Skinner family of “Wembley Park” who sold Friesian cows for 282 cents, weighing 640kgs to return $1806.

The Holland Family of “Avondale” at Goolma sold Angus bullocks for 358 cents, weighing 553kgs to return $1982.

The Paddison family of “Bogan Gully” at Tomingley sold Hereford heifers for 358 cents, they weighed 390kgs to come back at $1396.

And for the Parker Family of “Uteara Station” at Bourke who sold Hereford steers for 480 cents, weighing 285kgs to return $1372.

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where numbers fell due to some rainfall in the supply area. A mixed quality yarding was on offer with the expected heavy weights and only a few trade lambs penned. Large runs of secondary lambs were well supplied as were Merino Hoggets.

Trade lambs were $5 cheaper with the shorn lambs selling from $152-$188. Heavy lambs were up to $12 easier in places. Most heavy lambs on offer ranged between $177-$228 while the extra heavies made up to $234. Merino lambs were $8 cheaper, as the trade weights sold from $150-$172 and a single pen of heavy weights made $195. Restockers are still very keen on secondary lambs which saw them selling up to $10 dearer, ranging from $148-$185. Merino hoggets sold from $158-$190 while xb hoggets reached $203.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following stock for their clients -

Locally for Ross Yeo of “Lambar” who sold 2nd x lambs in a 3 score condition, in a half inch skin for $186.

The Kelly family of “Hillview” at Wongarbon sold 2nd x lambs in a 4 score condition and a half inch skin for $210.

The Lawson Family of “Monte Carlo” sold Merino lambs in a 3 score condition, in a 12 week skin for $163.

Tom Power of Brookfield Rd at Wellington sold Aussie White wether lambs in a 3 score condition for $181.

Peter Hewett of “Hillview” at Tottenham sold xb lambs in a 3 score condition to the domestic kill for $195.

The Herbert family of “ Lynjoy “ at Nyngan sold xb lambs in a 3 score condition and a half inch skin for $193.

Into the mutton pens now where some very good sheep were penned along with a few trade and light weights in a cheaper market.

Light ewes sold from $96-$122
Medium weight ewes sold from $130-$168
Heavy weight ewes sold from $178-$220

Light wethers sold from $115-$135
Medium weight wethers sold from $140-$175
Heavy wethers sold from $184-$200.

Reminder - LPA NVDs


From 1 January 2021, only the updated versions of all NVDs (0720) will be accepted for all species.

A reminder to order NVDs now as delivery can take up to 6 weeks.

New NVD books can be ordered through the LPA service centre, using LPA log in details.

As part of the MLA Accelerated Adoption Initiative announced in November 2019, there is no cost for LPA NVD books until 30 June 2021.
