Fat Cattle

Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the first week of February 2020.  Tallied numbers this week included –

  1850 fat cattle
14600 lambs and
12000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a smaller number on offer due to rain in the drawing areas.   It was an extremely good market on what was 15 to 20 cents dearer for all categories, with feeder cattle enjoying the highest rises of between 20 and 30 cents, with young light restocker cattle in high demand on what was a very strong market.

Light plain vealer steers to restockers and mainly under 200kg live – 291 to 428 cents.  Young light vealer heifers to restockers – 292 to 390 cents.  Yearling steers under 400kg to restockers – 280 to 336 cents on the lighter end.  Feeder drafts – 320 to 336 cents and heavier weights over 400kg to feed – 320 to 372 cents.  

Yearling heifers under 400kg to restockers – 278 to 306 cents on the lighter end, with feeder drafts 309 to 338 cents generally.  Feeder drafts over 400kg – 310 to 339 cents.

Into export sales, heavy feeder steers up to 500kg in short supply and high demand – 334 to 345 cents.  Cows were in high demand once again, with boner cows 215 to 238 cents, medium weight cows 230 to 262 cents with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 255 and 275 and this week topping at 288 cents.  With the best heavy bull this week making 320 cents.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Firstly to Baradine for Darren Beveridge of “Gleneve”, who sold yearling Angus cross steers to feedlotters that weighed 345kg for 361 cents and these top steers came back at $1245.

Viv & Suze White of “Cardington” at Molong, sold very neat Angus cross yearling heifers out of the feed yards that weighed 360kg for 326 cents and these top heifers came back at $1170.

At Coonamble for The McGraw Family, who sold prime Hereford cows that weighed 795kg for a market topping 288 cents and these top cows returned $2290.

To Tottenham for Ian & Roz McFadyen of “Killarney”, who sold light weight Charolais cross steer weaners for 296 cents, they weighed 211kg and they came back at $625.

Brian & Maree Plummer of “Trigoona”, sold large framed Hereford cross cows for 251 cents, they weighed 490kg and they came back at $1230.

While for The Gordon Family of “Moolculta West” at Bourke, who sold heavy Santa cross feeder steers that weighed 450kg, for 345 cents to come back at $1550.

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where we had 2 week’s worth of numbers due to the Australia Day long weekend last week.  There was  some good quality lambs on offer and nearly all being grain assisted that sold $5 to $8 dearer, while all other categories enjoyed very similar dearer trends.

Into crossbred sales firstly, light restocker drafts up to 16kg dressed $71 to $95, with fresher forward drafts $85 to $140
Up to 18kg dressed $130 to $158
Light trade $145 to $162
Medium trade $162 to $180
Heavy trade $170 to $195
With export weights up to 26kg dressed $211 to $237
With heavy weights over 26kg dressed seeing sales up to $266

Into Merino sales, light restocker drafts up to 12kg dressed $67 to $111
Up to 16kg dressed $80 to $128
Up to 18kg dressed $140 to $158
Medium trade weights $160 to $165
Heavy trade $170 to $187
With export weights $207 to $225 and all being grain assisted.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Firstly out of Geurie for The Whillock Family of “Maxland”, who sold heavy trade weight 2nd cross lambs, with a ½ inch skin for $185.

Cameron & Kylie Beard, sold 2nd cross export weight lambs – all off the feeders, with a 1 inch skin in a 4 score condition and these top lambs made $237.

Paul Vernon of “Gunners Dam” at Wellington, sold light export Merino lambs off the grain feeders, in a 3 score condition for $173.

At Trangie for Greg & Kate Broughton of “Jamea”, who sold export weight 1st cross lambs out of the feedlot, in a 4 score condition, with a ½ inch skin and these top lambs made $230.

While at Carinda for The Green Family of “Mangoplah”, who sold young 1st cross lambs to restockers, unshorn for $127.

Into mutton pens, where like the lambs it was a dearer market of between $8 and $15 and could have been more on the heavy weight ewes.

Light boner ewes $60 to $67
Boner ewes $68 to $104
Medium weight ewes $125 to $179 for Merino’s or $128 to $154 for crossbreds
With export weights $150 to $220 for crossbreds for $160 to $200 for Merino’s

Boner wethers in shorter supply seeing sales up to $95
Medium weights $103 to $130
With export weights in short supply but making up to $158.

Just a quick quote for Brian & Maree Plummer of “Trigoona” at Tottenham, sold large framed Merino ewes with a 6 week skin, to the exporters for $174.
