Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the last week of March 2020.  Tallied numbers this week included –

1400 fat cattle
5200 lambs and

 900 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a mixed quality yarding with good numbers of well finished yearlings and a fair number to suit the feeder orders. With cows and grown steers being in limited supply and no grown heifers on offer.

Young trade steers were up 6c while the heifer portion were firm. Yearling steers made from 360 - 407c/kg while the heifers brought 331 - 407c/kg.  Feeder steers lost 15c/kg making between 348 - 414c/kg and the feeder heifers had no change and sold from 320 - 411c/kg.  Young restocker calves lost traction losing 15c/kg with lightweight steers maxing out at 492c/kg while the heifers brought from 239 - 434c/kg.

Prime grown steers were 15 cents cheaper with quality being a contributing factor, selling from 298 - 333c/kg, while there were no grown heifers to quote. Cows also lost 15 cents, with heavy weight 3 & 4 score cows making 252 - 275c/kg.  Medium weight 2 score cows brought from 226 - 267c/kg.    

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Locally for the Millner family, who sold Angus heifers weighing 480kg, making 320c/kg and bringing $1536.

Now to Mendooran for Rodney & Kay Crothers off ‘Grandchester’, who sold Limousin steers for 402c/kg that weighed 311kg coming back at $1245.

Lastly to Coolah for Mark Young off ’Narranvale”, who sold Limousin cross heifers weighing 265kg for 427c/kg making $1060. 

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a good quality with a fair selection to suit both trade & heavy weight orders.  There were only limited pens to suit restockers with most buyers operating.

Lightweight lambs to the processors were stable with 12-18kg carcass 2 score lambs making from $146-$176.  Trade lambs were firm with the 18kg-23kg 3 score bringing $171-$229. The heavy weights were $8-$10 cheaper with 24kg-30kg selling for $215-$245.  Limited pens of Merino’s to quote.  The restocker lambs on offer were slightly dearer making $103-$166.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Firstly to Nyngan for the Hoare family off ‘Bel-Air’, who sold heavy crossbred lambs with a 1/4 inch skin for $234.

Now to Gulargambone for Col Ryan off ‘Mayfield’, who sold crossbred trade lambs with an inch skin for $193.

Now into the mutton pens, where it was a mixed yarding with all grades being $10 dearer. Medium weight Merino ewes sold from $124-$150 while the heavy weights made up to $210 and the crossbred portion sold to $233 with mutton averaging between 650 - 720c/kg.

Just a quick quote this week for the Johnston Family, who sold crossbred ewes in a 3 & 4 score condition for $186.
