Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 1st week of March 2020.  Tallied numbers this week included –

1300 fat cattle
9000 lambs and

2000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a very good quality yarding with the majority being young cattle to suit both the processors and feedlotters.  There was no grown steers penned and only limited number of cows penned throughout the yarding.

Young cattle to the processors were 15 to 20 cents dearer with the prime young steers making 364 to 390 cents while the heifers brought 338 to 406 cents. Feeders gained 10 to 15 cents with the feeder steers making 373 to 437 cents and the heifer portion brought 342 to 404 cents. Restocker young steers sold from 370 to 484 cents and the heifers selling from 350 to 442 cents.

Prime grown heifers were 10 cents dearer bringing 320 to 356 cents, while there wasn’t enough grown steers to quote. Limited cows were firm, with heavy weight 3 & 4 score cows making 265 to 300 cents. Medium weight 2 score cows brought from 220 to 256 cents and light restocker cows made up to 289 cents.     

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Locally for the Beard Family at Geurie, who sold Angus steers weighing 436kg, making 395 cents and bringing $1724.

To Mendooran for Rodney & Kay Crothers of ‘Grandchester’, who sold Limousin steers for 395 cents, weighing 342kg making $1352.

Lastly to Baradine for Darren Beveridge of ‘Geneva’, who sold well bred Angus steers to the feedlots for 436 cents, weighing 318kg making $1391 - also selling Angus heifers weighing 300kg for 386 cents bringing $1161. 

Fat Sheep & Lamb

Into the lamb pens now, where there was a good quality yarding of both trade and heavy weight lambs of both Merino’s and crossbreds.  

Lightweight lambs to the processors were up to $12 dearer with 12-18kg carcass making $129 to $188. Trade lambs were $5 better on the odd sale and averaging 990c-1015c/kg. The heavy weights were firm with the 24kg-30kg lambs making $239 to $295 while the over 30kg lambs topped at $310.  Merino lambs were $8 dearer selling from $178 to $260.  Restockers sold from $136 to $200.  

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Firstly to Molong for the Bateman family of ‘Tantallon’, who sold White Suffolk cross Merino suckers in a 3 & 4 score condition for $215.

To Geurie now for the Beard family, who sold crossbred lambs in a 4 score condition with a 6 week skin for $242.

Lastly to Gulargambone for Col Ryan of ‘Mayfield’, who sold 2nd cross trade lambs with an inch skin for $202 

Into the mutton pens now where it was a plainer quality yarding where all grades were $10 dearer.  Plainer Merino ewes in a 2 score condition brought from $108 to $140.  Heavy weight Merino ewes in a 3 & 4 score condition brought from $190 to $211, while the crossbred ewes made from $145 to $255.  Extra heavy Merino wethers topped at $250.

Just a quick quote this week -

Locally for Stewart & Anne Edwards off ‘Catombal Park’, who sold crossbred ewes in a 3 & 4 score condition for $188.
