Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everyone, this is John Lindsay taking a look at the last week of sales for 2021.  Tallied numbers included –

  1400 fat cattle
11000 lambs
4000 mutton and
  1000 store cattle

Into the cattle pens firstly, where the last sale for 2021 was conducted with a small number, with the market in general fully firm for all categories with the exception of export cattle which were up to 15 to 20 cents cheaper and could have been more in places, with not all operators in the market.

Vealer steers were in short supply and mainly to restockers 618 to 778 cents and they were light weights.  Vealer heifers also to restockers 560 to 700 cents, with the top end being Angus drafts.  Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters 500 to 612 cents, with suitable restocker drafts 614 to 720 cents.  Heavier drafts over 400kg to feed 464 to 626 cents with the crossbred portion in the mid 400 to mid 500 cents.  Yearling heifers under 400kg to feedlotters 524 to 570 cents generally and up to 600 cents for more forward mainly Angus drafts, with plainer restocker drafts 598 to 662 cents.  Heavier drafts over 400kg to feed 464 to 574 and up to 590 cents.

Into export sales which as mention was the hardest hit for the day, with bullocks and mainly being on the older end 400 to 410 cents, with suitable heavy trade weights under 600kg live 406 to 453 cents.  Into cow sales, medium weight cows 316 to 330 cents, with heavy high yielding cows 330 to 370 cents generally and topping at 388 cents.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Locally for The Millner Family of “Geurie Homestead”, who sold yearling Charolais cross heifers to feedlotters for 574 cents, they weighed 420kg and these well bred heifers came back at $2420.

At Molong for Viv & Suzie White of “Three  Rivers”, who sold Angus cross heifers also to feedlotters for 588 cents, they weighed 355kg and they came back at $2075.

At Wellington for The Crockett Family of “Nithsdale”, who sold CFA Angus bullocks for 406 cents, they weighed 670kg and they came back at $2710.

And lastly at Baradine for Darren Beveridge of “Gleneve”, who sold Angus steers to backgrounders that weighed 350kg for 718 cents and these top young steers came back at $2515.

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where like the cattle it was the last one for the year of 2021.  The market in general was cheaper by about $5 to $8 for most categories on what was a plainer yarding of lambs. 

Into crossbred sales firstly, light trade up to 20kg dressed $155 to $178
Medium trade $155 to $191 and up to $204 for the fresher types
Heavy trade $190 to $229
Light export $200 to $248
With export weights seeing most sales between $200 and $265
With super heavies over 30kg dressed this week topping at $280.

Into Merino sales, with kill drafts up to 18kg dressed $140 to $150
Medium trade $167 to $172
With heavy trade $149 to $174

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Locally for Craig & Kerry Walters of “Plain Creek” at Wongarbon, who sold export weight 1st cross lambs with a ½ inch skin for $240.

The Whale Family of “Glenroy” at Wellington, sold 2nd cross trade weight lambs with a fresh ¼ inch skin for $239.

Dave Campbell sold light trade weight 1st cross lambs, with a ½ inch skin for $178.

While for a Wellington Client, Merino lambs to the medium trade with a ¼ inch skin, in a 3 score condition and they made $154.

Into the mutton pens now, where like the lambs the market was cheaper by about $6 and $8 and could have been more on the medium sheep.

Light Boner ewes $60 to $88
Boner ewes $86 to $123 for Merino’s or $110 to $145 for Dorper’s
Medium weight ewes $122 to $166 and mainly being Merino’s
With export weight ewes $160 to $186 for crossbreds or $183 to $195 for Merino’s
With super heavy drafts this week and over 30kg dressed and all crossbreds $210 to $220

Boner wethers $98 to $102 and in short supply
Medium weight wethers $132 to $168 for Merino’s or $135 to $160 for Dorper’s
Export weight Merino wethers $175 to $215 with crossbred drafts up to $185
With super heavy wethers over 30kg dressed in short supply and like the ewes mainly being crossbreds making $200.

Well that about wraps it up for 2021, just a reminder - the first fat cattle sale back is Thursday 6th January, 2022 and the first lambs and sheep sale is Monday 10th January, 2022.
