Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay taking a look at the livestock markets out of Dubbo for the third week of May, 2021.  Tallied numbers this week included –

  1800 fat cattle
11000 lambs and
 4000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a mixed yarding of cattle with a large percentage of crossbred/Bos Indicus drafts.  The highlight this week was the export cattle, especially steers, with feeder cattle 5 to 10 cents cheaper on the back of a very strong market last week, with Bos Indicus drafts up to 30 cents cheaper.

Vealer steers in short supply to kill 466 to 484 cents.

Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters 389 to 489 cents, with the top end being Angus drafts.  Drafts over 400kg to feed 432 to 467 cents, with an isolated kill sale  420 to 467 cents.

Yearling heifers under 400kg to feed 342 to 380 cents for the Bos Indicus drafts or 430 to 440 cents for British Bred drafts, with drafts over 400kg to kill 400 to 445 cents.

Into export sales, young bullocks were very strong, making 390 to 412 cents and up to 385 cents for the 4 tooths.

Medium weight cows 252 to 290 cents.  Heavy weight cows 285 to 307 generally and topping at 326 cents.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Firstly, locally at Dubbo for Graham Baker of “Rosedail”, who sold Hereford cross heifers in prime condition, to the trade butchers for 448 cents, they weighed 391kg and they came back at $1755.

Sam & Phoebe Maroulis sold Charolais cross heifers to the trade butchers that weighed 380kg for 444 cents and these trim heifers came back at $1680.

The Skinner Family of “Wembley Park” sold Fresian cows that weighed 630kg they made 280 cents and they came back at $1770.

Billy Carter of “Strathmore” at Geurie, sold prime Angus bullocks that weighed 665kg, for 412 cents to the export orders and these top steers came back at $2740.

At Narromine for The Moody Family of “Mandalay”, who sold prime Limousin cross calves that weighed 280kg for 528 cents to the trade butchers and they came back at $1480.

At Gulgong for The Wood Family, who sold Santa Angus cross feeder steers that weighed 410kg, they made 444 cents and these top steers came back at $1830.

And lastly for Clarry George of “Yulcarley Station” at Bourke, who sold Hereford cross feeder steers that weighed 380kg for 468 cents and they came back at $1780.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where there was a slightly bigger yarding this week on what was once again a pretty good quality yarding of lambs, with the market just a little off the pace this week of mainly $3 to $5 cheaper across most categories.

Into crossbred sales firstly, light kill types up to 18kg dressed $136 to $142
Light trade $140 to $170
Heavy trade $160 to $188 for the majority and up to $200 for the well rounded mainly 2nd cross drafts
Light exports $170 to $210
With heavier weights up to 30kg dressed $199 to $228
With super heavies well in excess of 30kg dressed $250 to $260

To Merino sales, light kill types up to 18kg dressed $127 to $145
Medium trade $158 to $170
Heavy trade $160 to $180
Light export $185 to $192

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Locally for John Blease of “Tanners Creek” at Tomingley, who sold export weight White Dorper lambs to the export orders and these top lambs made $193.

The Whillock Family of ‘Maxland” at Geurie, who sold heavy trade weight 2nd cross lambs, in a 3 score condition, with a ½ inch skin and these top lambs made $205.

Greg & Vicki O’Connor sold export weight 2nd cross lambs, in a 4 score condition for $221.

At Geurie for Phillip Hubbard of “Kainga”, who sold 2nd cross trade weight lambs with a 6 sweek skin, in a 3 score condition and these top lambs made $195.

At Yeoval for Bruce Lees, who sold heavy trade weight 2nd cross lambs with a ¼ inch skin, in a 3 score condition for $205.

At Wellington for Paul Vernon of “Gunners Dam”, who sold export weight Dohne lambs in a 4 score condition, with a 1 inch skin and these top lambs made $234.

At Tottenham for Kim O’Neill of “Boganelle”, who sold trade weight Merino lambs with a ¼ inch skin, in a 3 score condition for $152.

Lastly at Nyngan for Gary Frankham of “River Ridge”, who sold export weight SAMM lambs, in a 4 score condition, with a 1 inch skin to the exporters for $220.

Into the mutton pens now, where it was a good quality yarding of mutton, where like the lambs was slightly cheaper even through the quality was still very good.

Boner ewes $96 to $119
Medium weights $120 to $162 for Merino’s or $110 to $146 for crossbreds
Export weights for crossbreds $146 to $186, with Merino drafts $150 to $188 mainly and topping at $194
With super heavies over 30kg dressed $190 to $210 for crossbreds or $193 to $203 for Merino’s

Medium weight wethers $128 to $165 and all Merino’s
Light export $165 to $200 for Merino’s and up to $165 for Dorper’s
With super heavies over 30kg dressed $190 to $195 for crossbreds or $185 to $218 for Merino’s.

Just some quick quotes this week for Carter Lindsay & Weber clients –

For a local Wellington client – large frame Merino ewes with a ¼ inch skin, to the export orders and they made $180.

David & Anna Smith of “Box Cowall” at Nyngan, sold their usual large frame SAMM ewes to the exporters, in a 3 score condition with a ¼ inch skin and these top ewes made $210.

While for The Goldsmith Family at Coonamble, who sold medium weight Merino ewes with a 4 week skin, to the heavy trade orders and they made $146.
