Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Shaun McHugh taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the last week of July. Tallied numbers this week included -

3100 fat cattle
20000 lambs &
5000 mutton


Into the cattle pens firstly where a good quality yarding was on offer with young cattle to suit the feeder orders along with well finished vealers and yearlings to suit the processors. There was a good selection of grown steers and heifers and a large number of cows were yarded. All the usual buyers were operating with some added restocker orders.

Young cattle to the trade were firm with prime vealers selling to 520c/kg. Prime steer yearlings sold from 445c/kg - 489c/kg, while the prime heifers sold from
440c/kg - 501c/kg. The better quality feeder cattle lifted by 20 cents, with the better end of the steer portion selling from 490c/kg - 565c/kg and the top end of the feeder heifers sold from 478c/kg - 494c/kg. Young cattle to the restocker had more interest this week with steers selling to 635c/kg and heifers reaching 555c/kg.

Grown steers remained firm to range from 391c/kg -471c/kg and grown heifers sold from 380c/kg - 460c/kg, that’s about 10 cents dearer than last week. Cows remained firm as the better heavy end sold from 318c/kg - 365c/kg. The best heavy bull reached a top of 346 cents.


Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for some of their clients -

The Hughes family of ‘Gullendah’ at Baldry, sold Shorthorn heifers for 420 cents, weighing 577kg to come back at $2425.

The McWhirter family of ‘Springfield’ at Tooraweenah, sold Angus bullocks for 390 cents, they weighed 717kg and returned $2796.

Bob & Robin Smart of ‘Tullarook’ at Trangie, sold Murray Grey steers for 476 cents, weighing 471kg or $2242.

Jason Beck of ‘Cadonia’ at Gulargambone, sold Speckle Park heifers for 468 cents, weighing 433kg to return $2030.

The Cosgrove family of ‘Mylone’ at Warren sold Hereford cows for 328 cents, weighing a massive 825kg to return $2706.

Doug & Katrina Menzies of ‘Summerlea’ at Nyngan, sold Charolais cross cows for 340 cents, weighing 670kg to return $2278.

And lastly for the Dunn family of ‘Bundong Station’ at Coolabah, who sold Romagnola steers for 465 cents, weighing 630kg to come back at $2930.




Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now where a mixed yarding with a good selection of heavy and trade weight lambs were on offer, as well as large runs of secondary types. All the usual buyers were in attendance and operated erratically with prices falling across all grades.

Light weight lambs to the processors lost $40, selling from $66 - $92.  
Trade lambs were $30 easier selling from $100 - $167.  
Heavy weight lambs lost $35 with those showing dryness and a longer skin were the lambs affected most, selling from $160 - $220.  
Extra heavy lambs topped at $233.  
Merino lambs followed the trend of the crossbreds with prices slipping as the trade weights sold from $98 - $128.
Restocker lambs lost $35 with young lambs going back to the paddock selling from $59 - $120.  
The best heavy hoggets reached a top of $165.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients -

Locally for Greg & Vicki O’ Connor of ‘Warren Downs’, who sold heavy 2nd cross lambs in a 4 score condition, with a 6 week skin to the export orders for $220.

And for Col Ryan of ‘Mayfield’ at Gulargambone, who sold 2nd cross lambs in a 4 score condition with an inch skin for $200.

Into the mutton pens now, where a good quality yarding was on offer yet prices fell $30 - $40 across all grades.

Light ewes sold from $25 - $63
Medium weight ewes sold from $70 - $120 Heavy weight ewes sold from $133 - $163

Light weight wethers sold from $80 - $112
Medium weight wethers sold from $118 - $143
Heavy weight wethers sold from $148 - $165
