Weekly Report

Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon this is Steve Gay from Carter Lindsay & Weber, taking a look at the Dubbo markets for this week.

Into Thursday’s cattle market where 3300 head were drawn for.  The market was very strong across all categories.  The heavy cow market was firm on last week’s sale, however it was cheaper than markets quoted strongly across the state in the last few days due to significant rain in some areas and a shortage of cattle to process.

Plain cows to the restockers were well supplied and they averaged between 155 and 170 cents for the better lines.

Feedlot cattle were very strong and some heifers to feed averaged well in excess of 280 to 290 cents.

Heavy cows in top condition peaked around 250 cents and averaged around 240 cents.

Grain finished heavy cattle were much dearer selling to 316 cents for steers weighing over 550kgs.

Plenty of lightweight weaner cattle including young calves were also well represented with most orders heading either into parts of the north New England and Victoria.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following stock for their clients –

From the Geurie district, firstly the Millner Family sold a run of heavy Shorthorn cross cows for 249 cents, they weighed 605kg to return $1509.

Cameron & Kylie Beard sold heavy Angus milk tooth steers weighing 568kg, they made 316 cents and came back at $1797.

The Crothers Family from Mendooran sold Hereford cross heifers to the feedlot for 288 cents, weighing 331kg to return $955.

Kerry Altus and Mick Sandford from Eumungerie, sold grain finished Braford steers for 311 cents, weighing 484kg to come back at $1506.

Ross and Lynette Robbins from Condobolin sold Shorthorn cows in forward store condition for 178 cents, weighing 427kg to return $761.

The Fraser Family from “Clover Creek” at Bourke sold plainer conditioned Angus cross steers to the feedlot for 293 cents, weighing 297kg to come back at $873.

The Weston Family from Nymagee sold a pen of Charolais cross heifers to the feedlot for 286 cents, weighing 299kg to return $856.

And for Don and Jill Yeo from the Old Dubbo Road, who sold 6 tooth Angus steers for 303 cents, weighing 556kg to come back at $1686.

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

To Monday’s sheep and lamb sale where 7300 lambs and 7000 sheep were penned.  There were plenty of good trade and heavy lambs yarded compared to the previous 2 months of sales.  Restocker lambs were also well supplied with most types dryer in wool and/or seasonally affected.

Restocker lamb prices didn’t have the zing as the previous sale and were probably $5 to $10 cheaper.  Better lines averaged between $115 and $135.

Trade weight lambs (18-24kg carcase weight) were well sought after and sold from $140 to $190.

Most pens of export weight lambs (24kg+ carcase weight) were of exceptional quality and were $10 to $20 stronger averaging around 735-774c/kg or from $204 to $257 a head.

Heavy Merino lambs topped at $230 for an estimated weight of 65kg plus live weight.

Mutton prices remain strong for heavy Merino’s and crossbred sheep, with lighter grades cheaper by around $5 to $10.  There was the absence of both a regular southern restocker order and processor who mainly provide strong competition on the plainer sheep.

Heavy crossbred ewes averaged $185 and topped at $200.

Medium weight Merino ewes with good cover averaged between $126 and $144.

Light Dorper sheep sold from $60 to $92 to average $84.

Plain 1 & 2 score Merino ewes sold from $35 to $69, falling by as much as $17 a head to average between $40 and $55.

Just a few quick quotes from the Carter Lindsay & Weber’s run on Monday –

Cameron and Kylie Beard from Geurie sold a heavy pen of White Suffolk X Dohne lambs out of the feedlot for $212.

Bruce Thornhill from Dubbo sold well finished light trade weight Dorper lambs for $138.

And Ian Grattan from Dubbo sold heavy crossbred wethers for $160
