Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the last week of August 2020.  Tallied numbers this week included –

 1680 fat cattle
12700 lambs and

2800 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a good quality yarding with a fair selection of finished cattle, with large number of cows penned but only limited number of feeders.

Young kill cattle were firm with prime steers yearlings making 346 to 394 cents, while the prime heifers made 340 to 419 cents.  Feeder steers were 15 to 20 cents cheaper while heifers were 10 cents dearer.  The steer portion brought 355 to 403 cents, while the feeder heifers made 350 to 398 cents.  Limited number of young restocker calves penned but sold to strong demand with steer calves topping at 438 cents and heifers at 410 cents.  

Prime grown steers and heifers were 10 cents cheaper, with the steers selling from 312 to 385 cents while the grown heifer portion sold from 300 to 376 cents.  All cows were dearer by 5 to 10 cents with light weight cows making between 259 and 292 cents, while the heavy weight cows sold for 280 and 310 cents and averaged 297 cents.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Firstly to the Brewarrina district for Lance Carter off ‘Wongal’, who sold Santa Gertrudis cows weighing 592kg for 284 cents, coming back at $1686.

To Nyngan for Nugget & Kay Carter off ‘Birrimba’, who sold Santa heifers making 300 cents, weighing 490kg bringing $1470.

And lastly to Dubbo for the Brock family, who sold heavy Hereford cows that weighed 610kg and brought 305 cents making $1860. 

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where there was some decent rainfall over the weekend bringing numbers back considerably on what was drawn for.  It was another good quality yarding with good numbers of heavy weights and trade lambs.  Most regular buyers were operating.  

Lightweight lambs to kill were $10 dearer and sold from $128 to $155.  Trade lambs were $10 dearer and more in places on the well presented lambs making from $155 to $188 to average between 725 to 770c/kg.  Heavy weight lambs were firm selling between $166 and $220.  Merino lambs were $5 to $10 dearer and sold from $145 to $179. New season lambs sold well with heavy suckers firm and trade suckers dearer selling from $166 to $196.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Firstly to Baradine for the Pickette family off ‘Ellerslie’, who sold Merino wether lambs in a 2 & 3 score condition for $147.

Now to Dubbo for Paul & Carmel Quinn, who sold fresh Dorper lambs in a 3 & 4 score condition for $163. 

In the Wellington district now for Matt & Kylie Whale off ‘Glenroy’, who sold crossbred lambs with a 1 inch skin, in a 2 & 3 condition for $165.

In the same district for Paul Vernon off ‘Gunners Dam’, who sold heavy crossbred lambs with a 1/2 inch skin, in a 3 & 4 score condition for $190.

Now in the mutton pens, where it was a good quality yarding.  Light and medium weight Merino ewes were firm and made from $130 to $150 while heavy weight ewes were $5 cheaper and sold for $155 to $182.

Just a quick quote this week for the Plummer family off ’Trigoona’, who sold Merino ewes with a 1/2 inch skin, in a 3 & 4 score condition for $160.
