Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everyone this is John Lindsay taking a look at this week’s livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the first week of May 2023.  Tallied numbers this week included -

  5200 fat cattle
12000 lambs
8500 grown sheep and
    800 store cattle

Into the cattle pens firstly where it was another large yarding despite some rainfall over the weekend.  It was a much more mixed, plainer yarding than previous weeks.  The market in general was only just firm for good quality cattle and I mean only just, with any plainer cattle regardless of breed 20-30 cents cheaper and could have been more in places, with light restocker types particularly weaners under 200kg extremely tough.

Lightweight vealer steers were well supplied 200 to 350 cents with plenty in the 250 to 300 cent bracket, with the heifer portion 150 to 300 cents.  Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters 320 to 350 generally and up to 390 cents for the Angus drafts, with heavier drafts up to 500kg 330 to 370 cents to feed or 350 to 410 to kill.  Plain yearling heifers under 400kg to restockers 190 to 220 cents with fresher types to feed 270 to 342 but needed to be forward to get over 300 cents.  Heavier drafts over 400kg 330 to 390 cents to kill or 276 to 340 to feed.

To export sales, heavy feeder steers to feed up to 600kg 300 to 358, with kill types 298 to 330 cents for the majority and up to 370 cents for the best.  Heavy heifers to kill up to 500kg 280 to 330 with heavy weights 315 to 330 generally and up to 348 cents for the pick.  Light boner cows to restockers 110 to 190 cents, medium weights 222 to 275 cents with heavy high yielding cows 260 to 275 cents.

Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following results for clients this week -

Firstly for the Millner family off “Geurie Homestead”, who sold Charolais cross steers to feedlotters for 352 cents they weighed 435kg to return $1532.
