Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 2nd week of May 2023.  Tallied numbers this week included –

4000 fat cattle
15600 lambs and
14200 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a mixed quality yarding.  With big numbers of young cattle to suit the feeders and processors with some good pens of grown steers and heifers alongside a larger supply of cows.

Young kill cattle were 15 cents cheaper and more in places with prime yearlings bringing 270 - 394c/kg.  Feeder steers were 15 – 20 cents cheaper, while feeder heifers were 10 – 15 cents cheaper.  Feeder steers selling from 258 - 396c/kg while the feeder heifers made 240 - 351c/kg.  Young restockers sold to a weaker demand being up to 30 cents cheaper selling to a top of 403c/kg for steers and 334c/kg for heifers.  

Grown steers and heifers were 20 -30 cents cheaper with the prime grown steers making 269 – 335c/kg, while the heifer portion brought 275 – 326c/kg.  Cows were back by up to 25 – 30 cents, with the medium 2 and 3 score cows selling from 130 – 226c/kg, while the prime heavy weights making 200 - 242c/kg to average around 231c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Firstly, to Tottenham for the Plummer family of “Trigoona”, who sold well finished Red Angus steers for 335 cents, they weighed in at 559kg coming back at $1874.

Across to Nyngan now for the John & Mary Burley of “Woodlands Station”, who sold Angus cross cows in fresh condition bringing 228 cents and weighing up at 736kg bringing $1678.

To Gilgandra now for the Hall family off “Cornucopia”, who sold heavy weight Angus cross steers weighing 622kg making 317 cents and coming back at over $1973.

Locally in the Dubbo district for the Clatworthy family off “Mia Mia”, who sold well bred Angus steers weighing 448kg bringing 365 cents, making over $1636.

At Yeoval for the Atkinson family off “Wonga”, who sold heavy weight Santa Gertrudis cows for 212 cents, they weighed 750kg bringing $1590.

Lastly in the Wellington district for the Deshon family off “Rocklee”, who sold 6 tooth Angus heifers that weighed 588kg selling for 290 cents, coming back at $1707.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a much plainer quality yarding with only the odd pen of well finished trade lambs and heavyweights with a larger portion of secondary types penned.  

Lightweight lambs to kill were $10 cheaper with the 12kg – 18kg 2 scores making from $45 - $75.  Trade weight lambs were $5 - $10 cheaper making $68 - $170 to average around 570 - 650c/kg.  Heavy weight lambs were $5 - $10 cheaper with old lambs 24kg – 30kg selling from $142 - $209 to average 675c/kg, with lambs over 30kg selling from $223 - $250. Limited trade weight Merino lambs sold from $76 - $144.

 Just a quick quote this week for the O’Connor family off “Warren Downs” at  Wongarbon, who sold heavyweight crossbred lambs in fresh 4 score condition, with 8 weeks skin for $195.

Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a bigger yarding that saw ewes lose $15 - $20, while Merino wethers were $10 - $15 cheaper.  Merino ewes sold from $40 - $156, while the crossbred ewes brought $72 - $170 and the Merino wethers topped at $155.  The better sheep averaged between 390 – 425c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients -

To Tottenham for the Plummer family off “Trigoona”, who sold, well bred Merino ewes with a half inch skin, in a 4 score condition for $137.

To Wellington now for the Edwards family off “Westcourt”, who sold heavy weight Merino ewes with an inch and a half skin for $116.

And lastly to Euchareena for the Brazier family off “Wombang”, who sold Merino ewes with a 6 week skin, in a 2 & 3 score condition to the local exporter for $76.
