Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the last week of November 2019.  Tallied numbers this week included –

  4000 fat cattle
  7000 lambs and
10500 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a plainer younger yarding of cattle.  The market in general was up to 30 cents cheaper for all restocker cattle, particularly the light weights, with feeder heifers 6 to 10 cheaper and the steers had very similar trends.  Medium weight cows were 5 to 10 cents cheaper, with the heavy weight cows up to 20 cents cheaper and could have been up to 30 cents cheaper in places.

Vealer steers mainly to restockers 225 to 280 cents, with the heifer portion 156 to 256 cents.  Light weight yearling steers to restockers 200 to 296 cents, with heavier drafts over 400kg to feed in short supply 260 to 280 cents for the majority and up to 315 cents for fresh, forward Angus drafts.

Light weight yearling heifers to restockers 176 to 252 cents, with heavier weights over 400kg in short supply 228 to 265 cents.  Into export sales, heavy feeder steers were in short supply but seeing most sales between 275 to 300 cents.  

Boner cows mainly to restockers 108 to 155 cents, medium weight cows 120 to 195 cents to restockers or 145 to 183 cents to kill, with heavy high yielding cows 175 to 214 cents for the majority with the cleaner fresher drafts 190 to 240 cents, with plenty in that 220 cents bracket.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

For an eastern vendor, Angus cross feeder steers that weighed 405kg for 286 cents and these fresh young steers came back at $1155.

To Tooraweenah for The McWhirter Family of “Springfield”, who sold Angus cross feeder steers for 295 cents, they weighed 410kg to come back at $1215.

To Coonamble, grain fed Droughtmaster cross steers to the exporters for 280 cents, they weighed 430kg to come back at $1214.

While The Manns Family of “Gidgee” at Cobar, sold very trim Santa cows that weighed 485kg for 212 cents and they came back at $1035

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

To the lamb pens, where there was a smaller number on offer once again, with a large percentage being light weights regardless of breed.  The market was only just firm for most categories and up to $8 cheaper for killable lambs, restocker lambs surprisingly were dearer.

Into young lambs or suckers firstly, with light restocker types up to 18kg dressed $97 to $140
Light trade weights in short supply $140 to $153
Medium trade $150 to $166
With heavy trade weights $165 to $177

Into older crossbred sales, restocker types up to 16kg dressed $90 to $124, with killable drafts $128 to $140
Medium trade weights $150 to $172
Heavy trade weights $150 to $165
With export weights $172 to $193

Into Merino sales, light kill types up to 16kg dressed $88 to $128
Medium trade weights $156 to $178
With export weights in short supply and barely enough to quote, however one heavy draft got to $180.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Locally for Ross Yeo of “Lambar” at Dubbo, who sold heavy trade weight unshorn suckers, in a 3 score condition for $177.

To Wellington for The Whale Family of “Glenroy”, who sold young 2nd cross suckers to restockers and these very well bred suckers made $119.

Bob & Robin Hubbard of “Tanna”, also sold unshorn trade weight suckers in a 3 score condition for $153.

Scott & Jane Johnston of “Springburn”, sold light trade weight Dorper lambs for $118.

While for a western vendor, young light 1st cross suckers to restockers, unshorn and they made $70.

Into the mutton pens, where it was a larger number again on what was a plainer yarding compared to previous weeks, which resulted in plainer sheep being $2 to $4 cheaper, while the heavy drafts were $6 to $8 dearer.

Boner ewes $76 to $106
Medium weight Merino ewes $105 to $136 for the majority, with larger frame and longer skins making up to $160, with crossbred drafts $115 to $150
With export weights $133 to $225 for crossbreds or $160 to $207 for Merino’s

Light boner wethers $50 to $62
Boner wethers $68 to $104
Medium weights $96 to $140 and mainly all Merino’s
With export weights mainly all crossbred drafts this week $163 to $194

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients –

Out of Coolah, trade weight Merino wethers in a 3 score condition, with a 4 week skin and they made $124.

On the same truck as the lambs the Johnston Family sold heavy Dorper ewes to the exporters in a 4 score condition and they made $170.
