Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with a look at this week’s livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 2nd week of July 2019.  Tallied numbers this week included –

  4500 fat cattle
17000 lambs and
  8000 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was a smaller number on offer, however it was a good quality yarding of cattle with all categories represented.  The market was 10 cents dearer for any killable trade cattle, with feeder cattle 3 to 5 cents dearer, whether it be steer or heifer, with cows up to 10 cents dearer regardless of weight, with quality being a contributing factor towards the high prices.

Vealer steers were in shorter supply and mainly under 280kg to restockers 238 to 297 cents, with heifers of the same weight and also to restockers 210 to 237 cents with a large majority in the mid 250’s.  Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters 243 to 313 cents, with restocker drafts 240 to 290 cents, with heavier drafts over 400kg 260 to 320 cents, with some very well bred Angus drafts making up to 345 cents.  

Yearling heifer under 400kg to feedlotters 239 to 258 and up to 275 for the fresher forward drafts, with heavier drafts over 400kg in shorter supply 267 to 298 cents, with some high quality killable drafts being in short supply 260 to 318 cents with the top end mainly being grain assisted.  

There wer limited export weight steers to quote and mainly to feeders, with drafts up to 400kg 248 to 316 cents, with heavier drafts over 400kg 234 to 302 cents.  

Boner cows 90 to 110 cents for restocker or 176 to 185 cents to kill.  Medium weights saw most sales between 160 and 218 cents, with the fresher high yielding mainly crossbred drafts making between 224 and 240 cents.  With heavy high yielding cows seeing most results between 192 and 235 cents, with the top end being forward and fresh 225 to 263 and this week topping at 277 cents.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Locally for The Grattan Family who sold fresh Angus weaners to backgrounders for 290 cents, they weighed 275kg and they came back at $795.

At Coonamble for Malcolm Lampe of “Nebea”, who sold prime Angus cows that weighed 615kg for 263 cents and these top cows returned $1620.

Coonamble High sold a prime Charolais cross steer to the trade butchers that weighed 475kg for 331 cents and this top calf came back at $1575.

Tom & Steph Ryan of “Luckenough”, sold Angus cross feeder steers for 305 cents, they weighed 410kg and these top steers returned $1250.

At Tottenham for The Weber Family of “Chelsea”, who sold Angus heifers to restockers for 234 cents, they weighed 205kg and these well bred heifers came back at $480.

Richardson & Son of “Karamea” at Trangie, sold Angus feeder steers for 313 cents, they weighed 300kg and these well bred young steers came back at $940.

The Menzies Family of ‘Summerlea” at Nyngan, sold young Hereford cross steers to backgrounders for 280 cents, they weighed 265kg and these top little steers came back at $740.

Peter Edwards & Amanda Dunn of “Tubbavilla” at Coolabah, sold Romagnola cross cows that weighed 760kg for 271 cents and these top cows came back at $2067.

And lastly for The Nitsche Family of “Volo Station” at Wilcannia, who sold Red Angus steers to feedlotters that weighed 355kg for 299 cents and these well bred steers came back at $1064.

Into the lamb pens, where there was a smaller number on offer due to some local rain over the weekend, the market in general was $7 to $10 dearer for all categories on what is still a very strong market.

Into crossbred sales firstly, kill drafts up to 16kg dressed $100 to $146, with restocker drafts $135 to $142
Up to 18kg dressed $143 to $165, with some fresh well rounded 2ndcross drafts making up to $173
Light trade $158 to $182
Medium trade $185 to $210 and up to $225 for the pick of this category
Heavy trade $215 to $245
Light export $240 to $265
With extra heavies in excess of 26kg dressed $230 to $270 generally and up to $297, with this week’s top price being $322 for a pen of 2ndcross lambs estimated to weigh well in excess of 30kg dressed.

Up to 16kg dressed $113 to $135
Up to 18kg dressed $146 to $166
Trade weights $151 to $182
Medium trade $170 to $188

With export weights this week seeing sales between $255 and $265 with this week’s top price being $277 for a pen of Merino lambs estimated to weigh well in excess of 30kg dressed.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

Locally for Phil Hubbard of “Kainga” at Wellington, who sold 2nd cross lambs with an 8 week skin in a 4 score condition, to the exporters for $244.

Doug & Lorna Bambrick sold light trade weight Dorper lambs to the light kill orders and they made $117.

And for The Pascoe Family of “Pinehill” at Tomingley, who sold heavy trade weight crossbred lambs, in a 3 score condition for $198.

Into the mutton pens now, where like the lambs it was a dearer market of between $2 and $6 on what I thought was already a very strong market.

Light boner ewes $73 to $85
Boner ewes $92 to $100 generally and up to $113 for the framier types
Medium weights up to 24kg dressed $104 to $155 for crossbreds, while Merino’s were $100 to $150 for the majority and up to $176
With export weights $149 to $188 for crossbreds or $146 to $204 for Merino’s 

Light boner wethers $55 to $65
Boner wethers $93 to $119
Medium weights up to 24kg dressed $124 to $150
With export weights $160 to $180

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients –

Locally for The Edwards Family of “Catombal Park” at Wellington, who sold large framed Merino wethers with a 6 week skin, in a 3 score condition to the exporters topping the wether market at $180.

The Elder Family of “Woorndoo” at Girilambone, sold crossbred ewes in a 3 score condition with a 1 inch skin, to the exporters for $172.

And for The Young Family of “Pinegrove” at Nyngan, who sold medium weight crossbred ewes to the light trade kill orders, with a ½ inch skin for $127.
