Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Good afternoon this is Steve Gay taking a look at the markets from Dubbo for the last week of May.

Agents yarded a total of 18800 lambs and 8100 grown sheep.

Monday’s lamb sale was very strong across all grades with the addition of another domestic order.  I was amazed by the strong sales of secondary lighter kill lambs as well as good crossbred trade lambs making well in excess of 900c/kg.

Trade lambs to domestic orders ranged from $150 to $260, with most finished medium weight crossbred lambs averaging between $205 and $245.

Light 2 score Merino lambs dressing under 16kgs, sold from $93 to $139 and averaged $121.

I can’t ever remember Merino lambs selling so well across all grades.  Restockers and processors competed strongly on the lighter drafts.  Across the board trade weight and heavy Merino’s were at least $20 to $30 a head stronger.

Heavy crossbred lambs sold as much as $40 a head stronger and topped at $305.

Mutton remained strong especially on the heavier lines to the southern processors.  Heavy wethers topped at $220.  Heavy crossbred ewes sold to a top of $245.  Medium weight Merino ewes in fresh 3 score condition sold from $128 to $170, and the heavy Merino ewes sold to a $203 and averaged $187.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following stock for their clients –

The Kelly Family from the Marocara Dorset stud at Wongarbon sold their heavy crossbred lambs for $285.

Robert and Trish Scott from Yeoval sold short wool crossbred lambs in 4 score condition for $225.

Paul Vernon from Wellington topped the market and may hold the record for Merino lambs in Dubbo with an outstanding pen making $258.

Also from Wellington, Stuart and Anne Edwards had some 3 score Merino lambs with a 1 inch skin make $190.

Matty and Kylie Whale sold their trade Dorset lambs to the supermarket for $230.

Hugh and Louise Griffith had some thumping short wool Dorset lambs sell for $267.

Col Ryan from Gulargambone had some heavy trade 1st cross lambs reach $223.

Fat Cattle Report

Yesterday’s cattle market had a total yarding of 4100 head.  All grades were represented and the regular buyers were in attendance.  Plenty of store young cows, pregnant females and light yearling cattle continue to make up the bulk of the yardings.  Feedlot cattle were well supplied and in greater demand lifting the prices between 10 to 20 cents.

Vealer heifers to kill topped at 260 cents, and restockers averaged 198 cents for the lighter heifers back to the paddock.

Light yearling steers to feed topped at 305 cents and backgrounders paid up to 280 cents for lighter steers weighing under 300kgs.

Heavier feeder steers over 330kg topped at 330 cents and averaged between 290 to 300 cents for the better bred lines.  Heifers in the same weight category averaged between 255 and 265 cents.

Light cows to the restockers sold between 52 and 126 cents to average 93 cents.

Medium weight cows to the abattoirs sold from 150 to 190 cents to average 183 cents.

D4 muscled heavy cows sold from 190 to 234 cents and averaged 210c/kg.

Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Simon and Kelly Earl from Warren sold well bred Shorthorn steers to the backgrounders for 259 cents, they weighed 225kg and returned $583.

Randall and Kylie Carlow from the Kidman Angus stud sold Angus steers to the restockers for 268 cents, they weighed 251kg to come back at $674.

Mick and Jenny Robertson from Dubbo sold a nice pen of Angus steers to the feedlot for 325 cents, they weighed 372kgs to return $1210.

Greg and Heather Weber from Tottenham sold fresh Angus heifers to the restockers for 187 cents, they weighed 272kgs to come back at $509.

The Weston family from Nymagee sold large framed crossbred cows, back to the paddock for 130 cents, they weighed 427kgs and returned $555.

Now that wraps up the sales for the week.

More importantly, there is no greater time in life when the footy season and the cricket season clash.

I’m pumped about this Wednesday night and the clash between the blues and the cane toads. I’m even more excited about the World Cup clash between the Aussies and Afghanistan (10.30pm Saturday on 9GEM).

So I’m having a little multi this week.... Aussies to win the World Cup into NSW to win the series 3-0, paying $18.

Have a great weekend.
