Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay with this weeks livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 4th week of May 2023.  Tallied numbers this week included –

   5350 fat cattle
11000 lambs and
  9000 sheep

Into the cattle pens firstly where there was another large yarding on offer.  All categories were well represented on what was unfortunately a cheaper market.

Light plainer cattle regardless of breed, were hit hard, by up to 20 cents and could’ve been more in places, with all feeder cattle 10-20 cents cheaper.

Light vealer heifers to restockers, 200-234 cents with the steer portion 230-270 cents for the Bos Indicus drafts, with the British drafts 290-330 cents.

Yearling steers under 400kgs to feedlotters 230-270 cents for the Bos Indicus drafts with the British drafts, mainly Angus, 270-330 cents.  Heavier drafts over 400kg to feed, 270-360 cents for the British drafts, 240-270 cents for the crossy drafts.

Yearling heifers under 400kg to feedlotters 194-230 cents for the plainer types, with feeder drafts 220-260 cents, with better British drafts making up to 330 cents, with heavier drafts over 400kg to feed 220-328 cents with plenty around that 280 cent mark, with kill types 308-390 cents.

Into export sales, feeder steers over 500kg 265-315 cents, with kill types 240-336 cents. Lightweight plain boner cows, 80-138 cents to restockers.  Boner cows 120-140 cents. Medium weights 168-200 cents with a lot around 185 cents, with heavy high yielding cows seeing most sales between 196 and 220 cents and this week topping at 231 cents.

Carter Lindsay & weber has the following results for their clients –

Firstly, locally for Paul and Carmel Quinn, who sold yearling Angus steers to feedlotters that weighed 470kg for 372 cents and they came back at $1750.

At Baradine for Dennis Fitzgerald who sold Charolais cross steers to feedlotters that weighed 460kg for 350 cents and these steers made $1620.

The Catt family, of “Kienbri”, sold Angus steers that weighed 215kg for 312 cents to restockers to come back at $670.

At Coonamble, for John Harrison who sold large framed prime Angus cows that weighed 695kg for 230 cents and these top cows returned $1600.

At Warren for Jeremy and Audrey Weston who sold heavy Angus cows for 215 cents, they weighed 620kg to come back at $1340.

At Nyngan for Jack and Dione Carter, who sold prime Speckle Park steers that weighed 650kg for 316 cents to the exporters and these top steers came back at $2055.

At Brewarrina for the Glover family of “Toorang”, who sold Angus cross steers to feedlotters that weighed 510kg for 290 cents and these top steers came back at $1550.

The Kesby family, of “The Rocks”, who sold prime Angus cross steers to kill that weighed 560kg for 300 cents and these top steers came back at $1690.

While for Mick and Michaela Fisher of “Kilberoo” at Yantabulla, who sold heavy Angus cross feeder steers that weighed 480kg for 314 cents and these steers came back at $1520.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

To the lamb pens now, where there was a slightly larger yarding than last week. The market was firm to $5 dearer for most categories with the good quality export lambs this week up to $8 dearer.

Into crossbred sales firstly, with lightweight kill types which were stronger up to 16 kgs dressed $65-$76
Light trade $70-$95
Medium trade $95-$155
Heavy trade $150-$175
Light export $156-$195
With drafts up to 30kgs dressed $170-$226
With super heavies over 30kg dressed $228-$240

To Merino sales, light kill types to restockers $35-$45
Kill types up to 22kg dressed $68-$145, with plenty around that $90–$100 mark
With export weights seeing sales up to $140-$155

Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following lamb results for their clients -

Locally for the Whillock family of “Maxland”, who sold second cross lambs with a fresh 8-week skin, in a 3 score condition to exporters and these top lambs made $190.

Matt and Kylie Whale off “Glenroy”, sold trade weight second cross lambs with a half inch skin and these tidy lambs made $155.

At Nyngan, for the Cleaver family off “Murrabee”, sold export weight Aussie White lambs in a 3-score condition and these top lambs made $160.

And for Mick and Barb Davis of “Myandetta” at Bourke, who sold well rounded Merino lambs to the heavy trade butchers and these very tidy lambs made $96.

Across to the mutton pens, where like the lambs, the market was a little bit dearer.

Light boner ewes to restockers $22-$30
Boner ewes $36-$76  
Medium weights $67-$110 mainly all Merino’s
With export weights $104-$147 for Merino’s, with plenty around that $120 mark, or $94-$136 for Dorper’s
Super heavies over 30kg dressed $136-$156 for crossbreds, or $140-$159 for Merino’s.

Boner wethers $43-$76
Medium weights $79-$110
With export weights $130-$150 for crossbreds, or $104-$153 for Merino’s.

Carter Lindsay & Weber had the following results for clients this week –

On the same truck as the lambs the Whillock family, sold export weight first cross ewes with an inch and a half skin and these top ewes made $145.

And lastly for the Bryan family off “Newpark” at Warren, who sold large framed well rounded Merino wethers - mainly 2 and 4 tooths, and they went to the exporters for $140.
