Fat Cattle Report

Good afternoon, this is Hugh Edwards taking a look at the weekly livestock market reports out of Dubbo for the 2nd week of March 2023. Tallied numbers this week included –

4000 fat cattle
13,200 lambs and

11,500 mutton

Into the cattle pens firstly, where it was a mixed quality yarding, with some good runs of heavy weight steers, heifers and cows penned. With big numbers of yearlings to suit processors as well as secondary types for restock and feeders.

Young kill cattle were firm with prime vealers topping at 410c/kg. Prime steer yearlings bringing 320c - 434c/kg and the prime yearling heifers topping at 350c/kg. Feeder steers and heifers were firm to 5c cheaper with Feeder steers selling from 300 - 398c/kg while the feeder heifers made 260c - 354c/kg. Young restockers were sold to a weaker demand selling to a top of 468c/kg for steers and 370c/kg for heifers.

Grown steers and heifers were 5 - 10c cheaper with the prime grown steers making 310c – 358c/kg while the heifer portion brought 300c – 338c/kg.

Cows were unchanged, with the medium 2 and 3 score cows selling from 192 - 283c/kg while the prime heavy weights made 265 - 325c/kg to average around 281c/kg.

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Firstly to Nyngan for the Burley family off “Woodlands Station”, who sold, Charolais cross cows in fat condition bringing 286c/kg and weighing up at 663kg bringing $1898/head.

Locally in the Dubbo district for the Grattan family off “Tintinvale”, who sold, well bred Angus steers to the restock weighing 313kg making 468c/kg and coming back at over $1461/head.

In the same district for Dave Hearn off “San Diego” who sold, heavy Angus feeder steers in prime condition weighing 507kg bringing 365c/kg making over $1852/head.

Again in Dubbo for the Koerstz family, who sold, Angus Santa cross heavyweight steers weighing 610kgs for 356c/kg bringing $2172.

Lastly to the Bylong Valley for the Young family off “Ringwood”, who sold, Hereford cross steers that weighed 497kg selling for 350c/kg coming back at $1741/head.


Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where it was a plainer quality yarding with a large portion of Dorper/Aussie white cross lambs. With limited numbers of good heavy weight or trade lambs penned. Lightweight lambs to kill were cheaper by $10 with the 12kg – 18kg 2 scores making from $40 - $98/head. Trade weight lambs were also $10 cheaper with the trade weight old lambs making $98 - $197 to average around 720c – 745c/kg. Heavy weight lambs were $5 cheaper with old lambs 24kg selling from $196 - $266 averaging around 780c/kg.

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following lambs for their clients -

Firstly to Tottenham for Rick Hudson off “Elliots”, who sold, Dorper lambs in a fresh 2 and 3 score condition to the southern exporter for $115.

To Trangie now for the Mckay family off “Winnabri”, who sold, fresh crossbred lambs in a 2and 3 score condition for $138.

To Wongarbon now for the O’Connor family off “Warren Downs”, who sold, extra heavyweight crossbred lambs in fresh 4 score condition with an inch skin to the local exporter for $246.

Into the mutton pens now, where most grades were represented in a larger yarding that saw light sheep remain firm and the medium and heavyweights gaining $5. Merino ewes sold from $50 - $136 while the crossbred ewes brought $62 - $142 and the merino wethers topped at $130/head.

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following mutton for their clients -

Quickly to Hermidale for the Matchett family off “Budgery”, who sold, heavyweight crossbred ewes with a half inch skin in a 3 score condition for $110.

Lastly to Nyngan for the Hoare family off “Bel-Air”, who sold, heavyweight crossbred ewes with and inch skin in a 4 score condition to the local exporter for $130.
