Fat Cattle Report
Good afternoon everybody, this is John Lindsay taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the third week of February, 2021. Tallied numbers this week included –
2800 fat cattle
8200 lambs
2400 mutton and
600 store cattle
Into the cattle pens firstly, where there was another good yarding on offer with all categories selling to firm rates with the exception of export cattle which were 5 to 8 cents cheaper across the board, with young light restocker cattle still in very high demand.
Vealer steers mainly to restockers seeing most sales between 430 and 490 cents – topping at 528 cents. With vealers heifers well supplied – also a large portion to restockers, seeing sales between 420 and 480 cents and up to 490 cents for the fresher drafts. Yearling steers under 400kg to feedlotters 442 to 478 cents, with suitable restocker drafts 448 to 468 cents. Heavier drafts over 400kg to feedlotters in high demand 383 to 480 cents, with suitable processor drafts in short supply but seeing sales between 375 and 445 cents. Yearling heifers under 400kg to feedlotters 408 to 450 cents generally and up to 478 cents for the fresher mainly Angus drafts. With heavier drafts over 400kg to feeders 390 to 463 cents, with kill types 380 to 460 cents.
Export steers were cheaper by as much as 5 to 8 cents for the kill portion, seeing sales between 340 and 378 cents for the younger portion, with heavy feeders 360 to 438 cents. Light boner cows were in short supply 250 to 265 cents, medium weights 281 to 300 cents to processors or 276 to 285 cents to restockers and mainly being Bos Indicus cross drafts, with heavy high yielding cows 275 to 305 cents generally and topping at 316 cents.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –
Firstly, locally for Sam & Penny Deshon of “Rocklee” at Wellington, who sold Hereford cross steers to kill that weighed 490kg for 385 cents and these top steers came back at $1885.
At Yeoval for The Atkinson Family of “Wonga”, who sold their usual top quality Santa steers to feedlotters for 447 cents, they weighed 425kg and these top steers came back at $1900.
Paul & Carmel Quinn of “Caroo” at Dubbo, sold Charolais cross heifers to feedlotters, they weighed 420kg for 435 cents and these top heifers came back at $1820.
To Tottenham for The Weber Family of “Chelsea”, who sold fresh yearling Angus steers to feedlotters for 460 cents, they weighed 430kg and these top steers came back at $1990.
And for John & Mary Burley of “Woodlands Station” at Nyngan, who sold young Angus cross heifers to feedlotters for 465 cents, they weighed 320kg and came back at $1495.
Fat Sheep & Lamb Report
Into the lamb pens now, where widespread rain over the weekend prior did affect numbers slightly, however it was a good yarding of lambs on what was a very strong market, with most categories $7 to $10 dearer with the exception of Merino’s and only because there wasn’t as many yarded.
Into new season or suckers firstly, with light restocker types $130 to $156
Light trade weight kill types $154 to $175
Heavy trade $178 to $200 but needed to be fresh
With export weight seeing sales up to $210
Into older crossbred sales, lighter kill types up to 20kg dressed $165 to $179
Trade weights $180 to $198
Heavy trade or light export $190 to $215
With export weights $215 to $230
With super heavies in excess of 30kg dressed $255 to $270
Into Merino sales and they were in shorter supply, trade weights $160 to $170
With heavy trade $169 to $175
Into the mutton pens now, where it was an extremely strong market, seeing dearer trends of $10 to $15 on all categories and could have been more in places.
Light boner ewes $95 to $102
Medium weights $136 to $166 for crossbreds or $135 to $181 for Merino’s
With export weights up to 30kg dressed $158 to $210 for Merino’s or $175 to $205 for crossbreds and up to $210 for heavy Dorper’s
With super heavies over 30kg dressed $190 to $243 for crossbreds or $215 to $248 for Merino’s.
Medium weight wethers $155 to $165 and mainly being Merino’s
Export weights up to 30kg dressed $175 to $212 for Merino’s
With super heavies over 30kg dressed and mainly being crossbreds seeing sales between $230 to $252.
Carter Lindsay & Weber sold the following mutton for their clients –
Mick Sandford & Kerry Altus of “Milby” at Eumungerie, sold export weight Merino ewes with a ½ inch skin, in a 3 score condition for $200, while heavy crossbred wethers on the same load – also to exporters made $252.
The Whale Family of “Glenroy” at Wellington, sold CFA crossbred ewes to the exporters with a ½ inch skin for $190.
While Jon & Helen Matchett of “Budgery” at Hermidale, sold export weight crossbred wethers with an 8 week skin for $243.

Reminder - LPA NVDs
From 1 January 2021, only the updated versions of all NVDs (0720) will be accepted for all species.
A reminder to order NVDs now as delivery can take up to 6 weeks.
New NVD books can be ordered through the LPA service centre, using LPA log in details.
As part of the MLA Accelerated Adoption Initiative announced in November 2019, there is no cost for LPA NVD books until 30 June 2021.
