Fat Cattle Report

Good morning, this is Shaun McHugh taking a look at the weekly livestock markets out of Dubbo for the 3rd week of November.  Tallied numbers this week included –


2800 fat cattle
6000 lambs
2000 mutton and
1600 store cattle

Into the cattle pens firstly, where a plainer quality yarding with a larger influence of Bos Indicus cattle was on offer, there were still good numbers of properly finished cattle in all sections.

Vealer steer sold to 480c/kg and the vealer heifers reached a top of 460c/kg.
Steer yearlings sold from 380 - 446c/kg, while the heifer yearlings ranged from 360 - 439c/kg.  Feeder cattle were slightly cheaper, possibly due to quality.  Feeder steers sold from 380 - 450c/kg and the heifers ranged from 368 -426c/kg.

Prime grown steers also looked softer, selling from 350 - 412c/kg, and the grown heifers sold from 320 - 375c/kg.  Cows remained firm as the D3/4 cows sold from 295 - 322c/kg and the best heavy bull reached a top of 342c/kg.

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following cattle for their clients –

Locally for Tim and Carmel Koerstz of “Warrie” at Dubbo who sold Santa/Angus cross steers for 375 cents, weighing 565kg to return $2120.

The Skinner family of “Wembley Park” sold Fresian cows for 290 cents, weighing 690kg to come back at $2001.

The Johnston Family of “Komoora” at Geurie sold Shorthorn cross steers for 408 cents, weighing 440kg to return $1796.

The McConnaughty family of “Elstow” at Baradine, sold 8 tooth Charolais bullocks for 340 cents, weighing 729kg to return $2478.

The Millner Family of “Glenulla” at Coonamble, sold large frame Shorthorn cows for 316 cents, they weighed 731kg to return $2310.

To Nyngan for John & Mary Burley of “Woodlands Station”, who sold Angus cows for 311 cents, weighing 825kg to return $2567.

Nugget & Kay Carter of “Birrimba” sold Santa Gertrudis steers for 422 cents, they weighed 440kg to return $1857.

And lastly for Greg Taylor of “Borrona Downs” via Broken Hill, who sold Angus cows for 315 cents, weighing 709kg to return $2234.

Fat Sheep & Lamb Report

Into the lamb pens now, where like the cattle, quality was not as good as the previous weeks and the market reflected that in places.  

New season lambs were dearer selling from $148 - $200 with a heavy pen making $217, still freshness and presentation is the key.  
Trade weight old lambs $158 - $199
Heavy weight old lambs $202 - $240.


Merino lambs had a tough day, unless they were very well covered.
Trade weights selling from $138 - $175
With heavy weights selling from $191 - $217.
Hoggets sold to a top of $214.

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following lambs for their clients –

The Bambrick family of “Joycleen” at Mudgee sold fresh Dorper lambs in a 4 score condition for $179.

Bob & Robin Hubbard of “Tanna” at Geurie sold 2nd cross lambs in a 4 score condition for $207.

And for George Kidd of “Kungie” in Dubbo, who sold sale topping heavy crossbred suckers in a 4 score condition for $217.


Into the mutton pens now where all grades remained firm.

Light ewes sold from $119 - $125
Medium weight ewes sold from $133 - $170
Heavy weight ewes sold from $196 - $240

Light wethers sold from $130 - $165
Medium weight wethers sold from $171 - $210
Heavy wethers sold from $215 - $240

Carter Lindsay and Weber sold the following mutton for their clients –

For the Matchett Family of “Budgery Station” at Hermidale sold heavy crossbred wethers in a 6 week skin for $230.

And for Bridie Dunn of “Bundong Station” at Coolabah, who sold Merino ewes in a 4 score condition to the export orders for $176.

Reminder - LPA NVDs deadline


From 1 January 2021, only the updated versions of all NVDs (0720) will be accepted for all species.

A reminder to order NVDs now as delivery can take up to 6 weeks.

New NVD books can be ordered through the LPA service centre, using LPA log in details.

As part of the MLA Accelerated Adoption Initiative announced in November 2019, there is no cost for LPA NVD books until 30 June 2021.
